It's that time again. I'm off to the East Coast for a week. First stop, NY to meet with Catbird about their new fragrance that's currently in the works. I also plan on swinging into Marlow & Sons to see how the OLO essential oils are liking their new home! The rest of the time will be spent hanging out with friends and eating a ton. Then it's onward to North Carolina to see family and eat another ton!

FINALLY! I've been so busy doing events and filling holiday orders! I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying myself and absolutely love filling orders. I just haven't had the time to work on anything new lately. I have so many ideas and I so look forward to the rainy winter months in Portland. Everyone really settles in and creates. It's the perfect weather to be completely selfish with your craft. No one expects you to come out and be social!

I have three collaborations in the works. One in Portland, one in Toronto and the other in NYC. I also did one with my husband Jonathan, of Golden Retriever. He is always giving input on the fragrances as I work but this was the first time he brought his vision to the table. I can't wait to finish it!

Portland Bazaar

OLO fragrance, in collaboration with Nice Work, has created a 100% natural room spray designed specifically for the potty. Combining Alison's obsession with the smell of a freshly scoured bathroom and my need to cover any and all offensive odors...we present DEUX.

You know I like a good forest smell. The oils of cedar and pine are mighty neutralizers and are the main components. DEUX is available for a limited run for the low low price of $30. It should be on my website in the next few days. I will also deliver to Palace and Frances May this week.

The holiday's are just not busy enough for me! Hours on end bottling those teeny tiny sample vials leave me feeling so refreshed I thought, "why not co-curate a three day long shopping event"? Just a little something extra to ring in the festivities! So, Alison Hawley of Nice Work and I teamed up to bring some of our favorite Portland artisans together under one roof. Located at the Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, Open for Business will be the chance retail encounter of your dreams. We aim to be the little boutique with a heart of gold. You will fall in love and then poof, we will be gone!

Our collaborative room spray, DEUX, will also be sold exclusively at this event. More on that later.

We open shop Black Friday, the 25th through Sunday the 27th. Hours are 11am-6pm. Come get your shop on.

I took a little vacation to NYC a few weeks ago. I also got a little work done while I was there! Fans of OLO had given me the name of some boutiques to check out and I was more than happy to do so. It must be said that I do not like approaching stores to carry my line. I've done it a handful of times but it gives me such anxiety! I've been really lucky to have some great stores seek me out and it feels more natural given the type of carefully curated shops I prefer.

So, the day after I stopped into Catbird( I didn't talk to anyone), Leigh contacted me for samples and wholesale info. Catbird had been one of my favorite stores. How's that for meant to be? Such a happy coincidence. I sent samples, they liked and now you can get OLO at Catbird in Williamsburg!

Mr. Lee's General Store & Haberdashery

In case you haven't figured it out yet, OLO fragrance blends are unisex. Some definitely lean a little masculine or feminine but my intention has never been for any of my blends to be categorized that way. I love creating perfume that can be easily worn by anyone.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how well received OLO has been by men. I've had so many guys tell me how much they love what I create. I'm noticing more and more how much guys are really into fragrance. I'm sorry I haven't paid more attention to you fellas!

OLO will now be available at Mr. Lee's General Store & Haberdashery. All the dashing gentleman in Vancouver, BC must shop there. Mr. Lee's seems to have quite an assortment of unique wares. Everything from apothecary items to clothing. Pretty much anything a man needs! I'm happy OLO has found a home at such a well curated establishment.

We hung out with Pam (Frances May) and Alison (Honorable Mention) before heading over to Clyde Common for lunch. I like when people like to eat. It's my thing. It's also nice to get to know my vendors because they are the ones that present my perfume to the world. I love learning about the visions of store owners, what they want to offer their communities. It inspires me to work hard to make the best fragrance line I can.

Leisure Nomad

Last fall, things were a little slow. I was cutting back on my day job and focusing more on OLO. Lots of people were losing their jobs due to the recession. Freelance work was scarce. There was an abundance of free time. Why not make a commercial?

Ashby Collinson was the original inspiration for Leisure Nomad. She’s often involved in projects but not necessarily ‘employed’ in the conventional sense. Every time I see her she has something totally different going on. She is always able to travel and be involved in amazing art projects. Chic always lands on her feet! Portland has lots of leisure nomads but Ashby is the one I thought of when making this fragrance. We collaborated on the perfume at first but ultimately I went a different direction with it. However, some of the ideas we had in the beginning did end up in the final version of the perfume. I knew she had to be in the commercial!

My friend Orland Nutt is a local filmmaker. He and Ashby have worked together in the past so it was just kind of a given that I would ask him to do this with us. I told him about Leisure Nomad and said, “Let’s make a fake commercial”. His response, “Let’s make a REAL one”! We both spent tons of time online checking out old perfume commercials. They are over the top! We were totally on the same page with our favorites. White Diamonds and Cody from the 80's were my inspiration. I wanted the commercial to be Ashby running in a field but the rest was up to Orland. I love how Orland is able to make beautiful imagery and maintain a sense of humor at the same time. Leisure Nomad is pretty but doesn’t take itself too seriously. I knew he and Ashby could convey that.

So, me, Orland, Ashby and Jonathan hopped in the car to find the perfect spot to film. We were looking for an open space so Ashby could flit about in her pretty white dress. We ended up at Rowena Crest. I had never been there before but it was exactly what I had pictured for this project. We stayed in that spot all day. The little oasis with cattails and water lilies and the herd of deer passing by were very happy accidents! Orland and Ashby did their thing while I carried around lipstick and bottled water. We explored a bit, filmed a bit, explored some more. It was like any other day trip except that Ashby was a little over dressed for a hike.

Golden Retriever made the music. I had no real idea what I wanted but I trusted Jonathan (my husband) and Matt Carlson to create something fitting the mood. So dramatic! They nailed it with the trippy synthesizer and over the top clarinet.

There was talk of extensive voice over but in the end we decided on the simple, ambiguous, “Leisure Nomad” at the end. I think it’s a cross between a Rasta and French accent. Maybe?

Thanks to everyone for indulging me on this. I appreciate being surrounded by such talented people. It’s fun to be able to express an idea and have people run with it!

Leisure Nomad now in Portland!

Leisure Nomad is currently available at Palace and Frances May in Portland, OR. I have a very limited supply of one of the ingredients so the scent maybe outta here sooner rather than later!

This fragrance has been in the works for quite some time. I knew exactly what I wanted Leisure Nomad to smell like and I set to work confident that it would be a pretty simple perfume. Not so. It ended up being nothing like what I started with! I intended to create a road trip through Oregon. A drive through the sage and lavender fields all the way to the tree lined coasts. Leisure Nomad was going to be a bright, dry floral that ended with a wet wood/ocean base. Eastern Oregon desert all the way to the Pacific ocean. I was never happy with the smell though. It just wasn't doing it for me. It fit the road trip in my head but not my idea of who a 'leisure nomad' is. It wasn't free enough for me. It was too accessible. I wanted something more rare. Something you don't come across every day. I put Leisure Nomad on indefinite hold.

Three months went by without even thinking about this perfume. I was looking for supplies online and I saw a mention of fire tree essential oil. I liked the description so I ordered some online. It's pricey but I had a feeling it would be good. I was right, I love fire tree so hard! It is sweet like juice, warm like wood. It smells like eating fruit in the front yard on a warm summer night. I got the idea to try it with my latest version of Leisure Nomad. It was exactly what I wanted. What seemed like a million versions (exaggeration) later I finally had it!

It's still a road trip perfume but I'm not sure where it goes. You still hop in the car and roll the windows down. Oranges roll around in the front seat, music blasting. You've got nowhere in particular to be so you just keep driving...all the way to Australia.

Leisure Nomad debuts May 1st

Think road trip...specifically eastern Oregon to the coast. This scent was inspired by my friends who manage to constantly travel to distances both great and small. I often receive text messages or phone calls asking if I want to spend the day in the gorge or go to Larch Mountain to hunt mushrooms or somewhere I've never even heard of to pick sage. I'm always impressed by their ability to use their free time to explore and still manage to earn a living. Somehow.

Indieperfumes

OLO just got a beautiful write up on Indieperfumes. Lucy, the voice of Indieperfumes, discovered OLO at Bird in Brooklyn. She ordered samples online of the perfumes currently unavailable there. I had actually just stumbled upon her blog around the same time and was preparing to send her samples before we made contact. That's been happening quite a bit lately!

Her thoughts on OLO are right on. She was really able to articulate what I try to express in my fragrances. She captured my process and intention more accurately than anyone yet! Words fail me more often than not, which is why I make perfume instead!

I am going to spend some time going through the posts of indieperfumes and trying some scents that Lucy may speak highly of. I am somewhat oblivious to what's going on in perfumery. Part of that is intentional, I don't want to be influenced by what other people are doing. I want OLO to be 100% true to me and my real life experience. That being said, there are some amazing independent perfumers being brought to my attention that should not be ignored!
I need to be more open to experience other perfumers take on life.

Thanks again to Lucy for taking the time to make us aware of the little perfumer's out there that we may never have had the chance to experience otherwise.

Girvin always manages to articulate my feelings about perfume perfectly. Words often fail me which is why I express my take on the world through scent. I'm glad there is someone out there who can explain what I often fail to. I had the chance to meet Mr. Girvin a few months ago and discuss our favorite smells. We both love the heaviness of tree sap, the almost palatable charred air after a bonfire. OLO is an exercise in pinpointing what makes the Pacific Northwest such an amazing place to live. I never thought this little hobby of mine would take my life in such a new direction.

This latest post ranks OLO fragrance with some of the perfumers I admire most. I'm so honored.

Cairo has just picked up the OLO line. My friend, Wolf Carr, is from Seattle and suggested this spot. I listened, sent samples, they liked and here we go! About the oil:

Argan oil is from the kernals of the argan tree. Originating in Morocco, argan oil contains a blend of over 70% oleic and linoleic acids as well as vitamin E, carotenes and phenols. It's great way to make your hair shiny and tame that frizz! Please only use OLO's Argan Oil Hair Tonic on your hair. Argan oil can really clog pores for some people and cause acne. It's only necessary to use one or two drops for your hair. I know it's tempting to experiment but leave your pretty face alone!

OLO Argan Oil Hair Tonic contains argan oil, vitamin E and fragrance. The current scent available is Cedar & Rose but I will be making another version soon. The going rate is $34 for

There have been some bumps along the way and the shop hasn't opened yet. I asked if she would be okay with releasing it and she was more than happy to. The description as it reads on my website...

Lightning Paw was created as a custom for Runningbear Littlewhitedove, a mobile boutique now based in L.A. Tamarah Westby travels around the country collecting old items that bridge the gap of what was and what is. Her online shop is simple; what she likes she hopes you like, too. Take a look at the OLO limited edition bottle. There were only ten of these made! They look the same at first glance but each one is slightly different from the other. The bottoms are engraved with OLO, __ of 10 and the artists signature. Retail price is $275 (includes 9ml perfume of choice). They will be sold at Frances May or ordered directly through OLO.

I was going to release them with a new perfume but changed my mind. Scent is such a personal thing I wanted customers to have a choice. I decided to just sell the custom bottle with the option to select any 9ml bottle of OLO to go with it. Also, this is a piece of art, it's not mobile. It cannot be transported easily so the perfume comes separately, to be poured into the bottle when you get home. And home it shall stay!

Portland glass artist Andy Paiko did an amazing job with these. He's been an acquaintance for a couple of years and I've always admired his work. I've been waiting for the opportunity to commission a piece from him and I've finally gotten the chance. He was able to create what I feel like is a perfect representation of my line, taking something very traditional and pushing the boundaries. Andy has an amazing balance of technical skill and imagination. I am so thrilled to have had the chance to work with him.

When I started OLO, I purposely made the packaging minimal so the perfume stayed affordable. I wanted the focus to be the fragrance. These bottles are a bit of a splurge for me and probably for customers too. This was about making the bottle I've always wanted but would never purchase for myself. It is kind of a gift to myself for working so hard this year!

Speaking of gifts...I will be giving one of these away! Anyone who posts a comment on this blog, sends me an email or likes OLO fragrance on facebook between February 10th-13th will be entered into the drawing. It's just my way of showing customers how much I appreciate their support. I wasn't planning on OLO ever becoming my primary business and I really appreciate all the kind words and encouragement I have received over the past year.

Get it? One of ten, two of ten, three of ten...I'm a simple woman who is easily amused. Plus, of X will be easy to etch on the bottom of the bottles. I get to do that part myself, Andy is giving me a lesson this weekend. I'll try not to ruin them!

OLO available in New York next week!

I'm so excited! OLO will be available at all three bird locations by the end of January. The owner, Jen contacted me about carrying OLO and of course I was thrilled! My plan was to contact bird in February (when my sample boxes are ready) but Jen found me first. It was meant to be. Dafne, Violet/Leather, Valens, Forêt and Dark Wave will represent when OLO hits the shelves in the next week or so! I'm also pleased that bird will be stocking the roller ball bottles. Roller ball bottles don't get the credit they deserve! You don't have to worry about spilling them or having them leak all over your carry on bag when you travel. Oil based perfume can be messy so I think the "better safe than sorry" approach is the way to go. OLO Roller ball!

So, go to bird.

OLO fragrance Essential Oil line

I’m excited to release the new OLO fragrance essential oil line. Aromatherapy was where it all started for me and I’ve always sought out the highest quality oils available. I’m hoping that offering single notes of my favorite essential oils will help customers appreciate the inspiration for OLO fragrance blends!

These first four oils, Lavender, Peppermint, Clary Sage and Port Orford Cedarwood were sourced here in the Pacific Northwest. They will be available in 10ml amber bottles and retail between $10-$15. Look for them to be available in the next few weeks!

I just realized I haven't posted on this blog in ages. OLO has been growing and I've just been trying to keep up!

Pauper is now available at Frances May. Pauper was developed in collaboration with Jason Kinney of the Pauper Voile line of scarves. We were thinking of the story The Prince and the Pauper, but the scent is also inspired by living life as an artist. It's about the duality of appreciating and experiencing the 'finer things in life' but having no money. You love well made clothes and good wine but so rarely get to enjoy them. Pauper is like being in the dark woods dressed in your finest clothes, drinking absinthe, waiting for golden light to shine through the branches and guide you to another land.

It's earthy and warm.
The main notes are wormwood, balsam and oud.

A few weeks ago Nile Nash and Cass McGettigan of San Francisco's shop extraordinaire Gravel & Gold came to Nationale and fell in love with our Nationale 6/7 from OLO. Since the scent was the fruit of a close collaboration with Heather of OLO to find an olfatic identity for our little shop, it is sold exclusively at Nationale. But we couldn't resist the charm and enthusiasm of these fine ladies and thus came the idea of doing a shop swap. They would sell one of our very favorite products, Nationale 6/7, and we would sell one of theirs.
Nile suggested I looked into these fabulous golden clutches from Mimi Berry fine leathers in London, and I immediately loved them. We now carry, in very limited quantity, both the Gracie and Ann models from Mimi. ($70/78).

I also couldn't resist Nile's project, Be Yourself, a tribute to her dad Graham Nash's first solo record Songs for Beginners. With covers by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Vetiver, Alela Diane, Port O Brien, and Nile herself, this should be a Portland favorite for the fall/winter (lim. ed. 180 gr vinyl with bonus 7", $28). On a side note, Military Madness is one of my favorite songs and with this I'm sending a nostalgic hello to my dear Sarah Peters with whom I would listen to Songs for Beginners years ago while closing the Belmont cafe.

All this to say we are so happy to bring a piece of this San Francisco gem of a shop to Portlanders and sure hope you will pay them a visit on your next trip to the Bay Area. And hell, if you're in need of more knowledge on contraception, pregnancy, and/or hot sex, Nile (a nurse and midwife) is starting a series of adult Sex Ed conversations this Wednesday evening at the amazing Gravel & Gold!

San Francisco is one of my favorite places and I have been looking around the city for a store to sell OLO. A store found me instead!

Gravel & Gold. I've been corresponding with Nile (one of the owners) about OLO being available there. She and her cohorts were in Portland recently and came across Nationale 6/7. They kinda love it. This fragrance is only available at Nationale and was made in collaboration with May Barruel. It is sold exclusively at Nationale. What to do? These sweet ladies got together and made it work for everyone...

Knows Perfume is now carrying OLO fragrances in Seattle! The owner, Christen, contacted me a few weeks ago about getting some samples and she decided she liked what I do. She just received her first batch Thursday. I'm really excited because I was just thinking about trying to find a store up there and this happened. Perfect fit! I can tell by the brands available at Knows Perfume that Christen loves the good stuff! The focus is on smaller perfume brands. The kind that care more about the fragrance than the fancy bottle it comes in. I can't wait to visit. If you live in Seattle or go on a trip, stop in!

Argan oil hair tonic at Nationale!

I just dropped off three bottles of cedarwood/rose argan oil hair tonic for Nationale to try. Get one while you can because these are a great deal, 1oz for $30! The line is going to be sold in 1/2 oz bottles for the same price starting in July so grab it now! You only need a drop each time you use it so it will last forever...or at least a few months.
Argan oil is from the kernals of the argan tree. Originating in Morocco, argan oil contains a blend of over 70% oleic and linoleic acids as well as vitamin E, carotenes and phenols. It's great way to make your hair shiny and tame that frizz! I scented this batch with cedarwood and rose but I plan on trying a variety of fragrances and see what works best.
Please only use OLO's argan oil hair tonic on your hair. Argan oil can really clog pores for some people and cause acne. It's only necessary to use one drop for your hair but leave your pretty face alone!

I teach Gyrotonic (look it up) in the space next to Palace so I stop in pretty frequently to see what's new. Charlotte and I have been consulting on a fragrance that captures the spirit of her new shop. Palace has an amazing selection of vintage wear and shoes as well as new clothing, jewelry and accessories. She also carries essential oil blends, raw amber and sage bundles. You can always find something in there! This place is definitely Charlotte's palace. Her kingdom surrounds her with all the things she collects. She lovingly presents this to us to take to our own home and make a part of ourselves.
When I walk into Palace I can always smell the raw amber. I love to rub the sample of amber, to get the resin on my fingers so I can smell it for awhile. I tried to capture the amber, incense and essential oil bouquet that is Palace.
OLO's PALACE fragrance blend is birch, pine needle and amber. It's like the smell of a warm breeze through a old pine forest. The combination of pine needle and amber conjure images of giant trees oozing with sap, baking in the heat of the day. We can't always walk in the forests of old so we must simply anoint ourselves and bring the forest to us.

There are so many things to report for OLO this month...First, I'm excited to announce that OLO can now be purchased at Frances May! Located at 1013 SW Washington (around the corner from the Ace Hotel) Frances May is an amazing clothing store for men and women. Jason(OLO branding man) has his full line of PAUPER scarves there. They have a great assortment of clothing and jewelry. Also, Rachel Comey shoes...I'm saving my coins for a pair of those. Pam and Ashley are super sweet and will help you find something unique. The owner Pam and I are also working on ideas for the Frances May custom scent. Look for that soon!
This means two stores in Portland now have OLO, Nationale and Frances May. I'm working with both to make sure the scents they carry reflect their store's identity as well as their customer's. Nationale will house Jmaes, Violet/Leather and Nationale 6/7. Frances May will carry Valens, Forêt, Erastus and their yet to be determined custom scent. Victory Wolf will be in both locations as will Dafne. Perhaps both stores will eventually have the full line...time will tell.
I'm spending the Spring/Summer working on custom blends. I know quite a few women in town that own their own businesses. For the next few months I will focus on limited edition blends that capture the essence of these women and their places of business. Palace and Fieldwork Floral Operation are the two I'm working on at the moment. More about this later...

Spring is here...Ah ha ha haha ha!

Almost every February/March here in Portland we receive what is referred to as the "Fake Out". It appears as if Spring has ambled it's way right around the corner. The sun is out, the skies are blue. Birds chirp and children play outside. The whitest people in the world frolic happily in public parks wearing next to nothing in terms of clothing. All the ennui of the rainy season is forgotten. Totally forgotten. We all know it's too good to be true but the collective optimism of Spring pushes us forward like a parade of innocents. We stumble bleary eyed from cozy coffee houses and sour smelling bars and bask in vitamin D. "Fake Out 2010" has been particularly cruel. Flowers had the audacity to bloom. The stamp of Spring. So very cruel. However, some good has come of this...Daphne. Daphne has been blooming all over my neighborhood and it is my mission to bottle it's essence. I am obsessed. As the rains fall upon us once again, I will hole up in my apartment and try to recreate "Fake out 2010". Wish me luck.

Violet/Leather is complete. It will debut at Nationale on April 1st. It's actually already there and has been for months. I never planned for it to have a permanent place in the OLO line but it has been well received so it's here to stay. It finally has a proper label and everything! This Violet/Leather is a slightly different version from the original. The leather is a little darker and I added a touch of vetivert. It's still a pretty straight forward blend. It smells like violet, it smells like leather.

I made Violet/Leather on a whim because of the Mark Twain quote above. I don't really have a reason. I read the quote and decided to make it real. Violet, leather for the shoe and wood for the floor. An assumption was made regarding the type of shoes and flooring said violet was crushed upon. I doubt it was a sneaker on concrete that Twain had in mind. I could be wrong. Enjoy!

I've been trying to get Valens out there since November. It's inspired by the original Old Spice. Old Old Spice. I haven't smelled it in years but I feel like I remember it. At least, I remember the way it made me feel. It always gave me a warm flush in my chest. It isn't a smell that I associate with any particular person, I just remember smelling it straight from the bottle. I don't recall where. It either belonged to my dad or my grandfather. It was the late 70's/80's so I assume every bathroom of every friend and family member had a bottle of Old Spice on the shelf. I know a few people that say they still wear the deodorant. I've never bothered to see how it smells now. I didn't want to copy the original, I wanted to make something from memory. I don't know if they smell the same but I do get a warm flush in my chest when I smell Valens so that's good enough for me.
Carnation, Geranium, Black Pepper and Cinnamon. Warm and spicy is the only way to say it. Valens will help us get through the last bit of Winter. We still have a ways to go. I have been in Portland for 10 years now but I am originally from the South. February was always the last of the cold weather. Maybe a few weeks in the middle of March but then Spring was in full force. My brain won't let it go. Every time February rolls around I think, "It will be warm soon". It won't. It will rain for the next 4 or 5 months. It's not like I mind the rain, I just anticipate the end of Winter a little too soon. Valens makes me not mind the cold. It's warm like a wool sweater. It makes me glad to bury my face in my collar to warm my nose.

The holidays are over and it's time to get back to work. I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do next. I have a few different ideas that have been in the works since last Spring but I am still having trouble finding an end point. I am inclined to complete these fragrances before I begin new ones.
The main thorn in my side is Leather/Violet. It still doesn't feel complete to me. I've sold quite a few bottles and keep getting requests for more but it just doesn't feel right to me yet. I continue to stress over the leather part of the equation. I know how I want it to smell but I haven't been able to make it happen yet. People seem to really like what I've done with it so far so I should probably just take the hint and be done with it.
I am also working with fennel. And ylang ylang. Together. It doesn't seem like those two would blend well with one another but they really do. At least on me. I get tons of compliments when I wear this combo so I'm working on one for a Spring or Summer release. This will be a pure essential oil blend, yay!
Valens will be released February 1st. It was supposed to be the December release but I got off track with Forêt and Erastus. I'm not going to give the ingredients now but I will soon. Valens is a Latin mans name meaning strength or valor. I'm into super old names that you never hear anymore. It's a faze I'm going through at the moment.

Jmaes limited edition arrives December 11th!

Jmaes is a scent inspired by artist Ty Ennis. Ty was given the middle name of James at birth but, due to a typo, his legal middle name is Jmaes. The odd spelling and difficulty to pronounce makes it the perfect moniker for a custom fragrance.

The scent itself begins with a crisp, clean burst of orange. It quickly warms to the complexity of black pepper. Black pepper is all about taking what is given and enhancing it to make it a more nuanced experience. It draws out the juiciness of juniper berry and the herbaceous wholeness of clary sage. The rich wood of vetivert is contemplative and serene in its dark vapor. Alternately light and heavy, Jmaes is the reflection of the work and being of Ty. At least it is MY interpretation.

Jmaes is a limited edition fragrance created for the Portrait show at Nationale. There are five 5ml bottles and five 9ml bottles available for sale. I priced them low,$5 and $15, so they may be purchased on a whim! It is a great show and will be quite the party and I want people to be able to take at least a small piece home.

I stopped by Nationale yesterday with a little surprise for May. Forêt! I wasn't planning on bottling it yet because I couldn't decide on a name. I've been calling it "all the woods" but that wasn't ever going to be the real deal. Jason and Mark were at my house on Thanksgiving and we were brainstorming. We had quite the list. Everything from "moss beard" to "Norwood". It got kind of crazy as the night progressed. Nothing stuck though. I wanted to release it but the name was really bothering me. Jason called me a few nights ago with "Forêt". They were watching a French film and someone said it and he called me right away. Perfect! Nationale carries a lot of products from France and the owner is French so it all fit. May was also very pleased that the "l'accent circonflexe" was correct. I can't take credit for that. Jason did a great job with the font and finding the most fitting name. That's why he does my branding. Visual! Erastus and Forêt are very much a pair. In my last post, I spoke of how I envisioned Erastus walking through the woods and taking a smoke. Forêt represents that place. I suppose he is now somewhere in France as opposed to the Cascades. Erastus can take a walk wherever he wants because he is a figment of my imagination based on the name of a man long since passed to some other realm of existence. Take him anywhere you want. The main notes of Forêt are scotch pine, cedarwood, silver needle and juniperberry. There is a touch of ambergris as well as many, many other wood notes. It has the clean, crisp aroma of pine that reminds me of the woods behind my house in NC. It warms to a heavy but still fresh cedarwood. I love it!

Erastus premiere at Nationale December 5th!

I've pushed back the Erastus debut to Saturday the 5th because I messed up. I don't know what I did wrong but the batch I had ready to bottle was not quite right. It smells good but it is not Erastus! I prepared a new round and it will be bottled and ready by Saturday. I hope!
Also, I keep getting requests for a violet/leather blend I was playing around with this summer. I had put it aside because I was trying to change the leather. I want it to smell more aged. I plan on releasing this one in the Spring for sure. I did a few custom blends of violet/leather so I just bottled a few for May to keep at Nationale. There may be 5 bottles left. I haven't named it yet and it's still not what I want it to be but it is there. I like blending single notes together so I'm not opposed to putting three in a bottle for you. Just know that I know that violet/leather is not a proper blend yet!

The price difference for these two is due to the cost of my ingredients. Ambergris($$$) is in Forêt. These blends are also more complex so I used a variety of different/more costly fragrances.

I don't know why I made this rule but I did and I'm sticking to it! Portrait will most likely be in 5ml bottles and go for $10. I went two different ways with this one so I haven't even decided yet which blend I want to represent Ty. It will be a surprise!

Erastus premieres at Nationale the 1st of December

Erastus is a new fragrance oil being released for winter. I wasn't planning on such an early debut but it has received a warm welcome so... here we go! Along the same lines as Victory Wolf, Erastus is based on the warm remnants of wood and tobacco. It was inspired by the smell of a wood box I have in my home. It was left to Jonathan by his grandfather, Wilbur. It contained match books from various places in Miami, clubs he played in through the years. Jonathan started keeping tobacco in it and it smells amazing! The name, Erastus, was inspired by a walk through Lone Fir Cemetery. I saw the name on a tombstone from 18--. I felt like poor old Erastus needed his name out there again. It main seem morbid to some people but that's the truth of how this fragrance came to be and how it got the name.

Erastus' primary note is tobacco. It's a cleaner, fresher tobacco than Victory Wolf. Victory Wolf was all about the scent tobacco and wood leave after the flame consumes them. Erastus is before the fire. Fresh tobacco and aged wood. I added a touch of silver needle and oakmoss to give it more of a forest feel. Like taking a walk through the woods and rolling a cigarette while you check out the view. I've never actually smoked a cigarette. Really. I'm from North Carolina where you take your first puff of a cigarette as soon as you are off the teat. Not smoking in the South is just not normal. I should at least dip. But it's true, not one drag. It's still a ritual that gives comfort just watching. It looks like it puts you in a nice place. Until you start coughing all over and turning yellow as you age. But for now, I like to imagine old Erastus taking a walk through the Cascade Range. He gets to a cliff looking over the ocean and rolls up a smoke. He is content. I like that.

in the works! Nationale is having an anniversary party in a few weeks. I'm still not sure of the date but I will post it when I know. All the artists and vendors that have shown at Nationale have been asked to do a "portrait" of another artist for this show. I had a brief flirtation with construction paper many years ago but I'm not much good with drawing and painting and the like. I'm creating a "fragrance portrait". It's basically making a custom blend but without the person's direct input. His girlfriend has given me an idea of the smells he likes. I've looked at his art and I know where he works and where he grew up. It must be a little odd for him to know he is being analyzed in order to create a fragrance. What if he doesn't like the smell I've decided he represents? Poor guy. I'm not going to reveal anything regarding the actual scent. It's a surprise! It will be available as a limited edition. I'm making a very tiny batch. Tiny! I am using coffee oil as the carrier. It is rather pricey so it wouldn't be practical to offer this one on a regular basis. Come to the Nationale party and buy Portrait!

Also, OLO will be releasing body oils for holiday gifts! Lemon verbena and lavendar. Maybe a version of the, as of yet unnamed, December blend that will come out on the 1st.

December fragrance in the works...

I have three new fragrances in the works for Winter. The one that shows its true face first wins! It will premiere at Nationale at the beginning of December. I believe May will be having a one year anniversary for the store. Details later.

I have a very simple violet and leather blend that I've been playing with for a while. I've given out some samples in hope of feedback but didn't really give a way for people to let me know what they think. Sorry! If you have a sample and you have something to say about it please write to me. Or May at Nationale.

Also experimenting with wormwood lately. I'm not going to comment on that one. Still waiting. There is a lot of waiting with perfume. I hate waiting. This will be a life lesson on patience.

The third one in the works is just called December for now. Just for now. Just for me. I wanted something really spicy and warm. Cozy. So far it has lots of different oils and absolutes. It just came to me, like a vision. Boys all over town decked out in their Winter duds. Hats and scarves and boots, oh my! All of them smelling like the spicy (clary sage, black pepper, carnation and more) goodness of December. Sweet, spicy and warm. Girls too. I've been wearing this for a week or so and love it more and more!

Also, it's come to my attention that people actually read this blog. I had no idea...Mother! So, this page does contain info about OLO but it also contains my rambling. I do not check for grammar, spelling or decency. My apologies.

Victory Wolf launch party 9/25 at Nationale!

I just delivered Victory Wolf today. We are having a launch party Friday, September 25th from 5-7pm at Nationale! Stop in and take a whiff! We will be giving away a free 5ml sample of blends with every purchase of Victory Wolf or Nationale 6/7. Free perfume...totally worth the trip!

The bottles have changed a bit to accommodate my fancy new labels. My friend Jason Kinney designed them for me and I love them. And I love him for taking the time to do the work. Anyway, the new bottles are now 9ml so the price per bottle is up a few dollars because there is more in them. Nationale 6/7 is now $16 and Victory Wolf an even $20. This size bottle should last a few months even with every day use so the price is very reasonable. If you run out of it in less than a month, we need to have a chat. Please don't over indulge in fragrance! Just a touch. Seriously. I mean it.

Victory Wolf has a few things in it but the main ingredients are cedarwood, tobacco and cade. Cade has a beautiful smokey birch tar aroma. Every time I smell it, I feel like I've been sitting by a bonfire. I made it for Jonathan because I wanted to make a smokey, masculine scent that smelled natural. Cologne for men mostly overwhelms me so I wanted a scent that makes you feel like it's there for a reason. An event or an act caused it to be. Going to a bonfire with friends is a good time and you smell awesome when you get home. Going to a club and drinking too much is depressing and you smell gross when you get home. Notice there is no fragrance out there that smells like stale beer, vomit and and ash tray. Cause it's gross. Bonfires are not gross. ANYWAY...Victory Wolf smells good on men and women so go to Nationale and buy some.

Victory Wolf is coming!

Victory Wolf is blended and ready to go. It will be delivered to Nationale mid September. I made this scent for my husband. He likes to wear Smokey Tobacco from CBIhateperfume(CB is my hero)so I tried to make something heavy and woody with a touch of smoke. I did a good job and it's my favorite. I will list the ingredients once I decide which version I plan to sell.
A friend asked what my last name meant recently and I didn't have a clue. She looked it up on the internet. One of the meanings said "Victory Wolf". My last name is Sielaff and I have no idea if it really translates any way at all into "Victory Wolf". I do think it sounds bad ass so I'm going with it. So, I made this fragrance specifically for Jonathan whose last name is Sielaff which is supposed to mean Victory Wolf according to some person who has a website. Good reason, no?

OLO at Nationale August 1st!

A small batch of OLO Nationale 6/7 will be delivered to the store Saturday, August 1st. Some bottle/label issues need work but I wanted to get something in there while it is still summer!

Nationale 6/7 fragrance oil

This blend is sweet and light, perfect for summer! Top notes of lemon and bergamot bring forth the crisp, fruit and floral smells of summer. Rose, vanilla and cedarwood warm to the surface followed by the sensual amber and musk. Nationale 6/7 is an oil based fragrance so it stays fairly close to the body. Only those you allow near may indulge.

The fragrance oil will be sold in a 1/4 oz vial for now.
Ingredients: fractionated coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, fragrance

Nationale 6/7 body oil

This is a slightly different version of the fragrance oil. It's not as concentrated because it is meant to be a body oil. Slather it on! Anoint yourself after a shower or bath. Give a back rub to someone you fancy. Wear it as a subtle perfume. Your choice.

The body oil is available in 1 oz bottles.
Ingredients: fractionated coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, fragrance

The same basice recipe as the fragrance oil but with some additions. Rosewood and sandalwood give this blend some depth while jasmine brings forth the heady floral note that makes boys melt. That being said, this may actually be the more masculine or unisex blend of the two. It all depends on what/who you're aiming to please, I suppose.

If you have any scents you would like to see from Olo please let me know! I am already planning the fall line. I have a very masculine blend already. Victory Wolf. I will write about the meaning of the name later. I've been wearing it to test and love it!

Note: Please patch test any fragrance on a small area of skin to make sure you don't have a sensitivity. The carrier for these fragrances is fractionated coconut oil. Please be aware of any allergies you may have before using any new product.

Finally! Well, Nationale 6/7 is almost ready. The blend is done. I ordered bottles and they were not exactly right. I love the way they look but they are too big! I will do something with them later. Maybe a body oil blend of sorts. I will figure it out. So, I picked new bottles and here I go again.
They will be here next week and labels should be printed too. By the way, waiting for things in the mail drives me insane.

Nationale 6/7 will debut at Nationale in the first week of August! I will only sell it at Nationale, you may not even get it from me. This is a summer blend so it will only be available through the end of September. Hurry! It is unisex although only the most secure of males will dare try to pull it off! Top notes of lemon and bergamot lead into rose, jasmine and the tiniest hint of vanilla. A base of cedarwood, amber and musk seal the deal. It's not a combination I would ever think to wear myself but people really seem to be into this blend. It's light but still sensual, perfect for summer.

Olo debut at Nationale

The first four fragrances by Olo will be available at Nationale by mid August. I hope! I still need to finish the labels but I think that will be done soon. Oh, I need to name the fragrances first. Naming them is the hardest part. Right now one is Nationale 6/7 because I blended my 6th and 7th try for May together. The sweet little jasmine patchouli combo is called Kali because I made it for her. Same goes for J. I blended his favorites together. The 4th just has this ? on the label because I lost the notebook with the blend in it. I found it later. They may end up keeping these names out of a combination of nostalgia and laziness. I made them all with certain people or places in mind so perhaps they should be named accordingly. Except for ?, that was just absentmindedness. You may only purchase Olo at Nationale at the moment. The moment being in August.
